A face well known in the political world has taken on the role of chancellor for Oshawa’s university. And the honourable Perrin Beatty drew a standing ovation Thursday when he addressed the crowd, which included University of Ontario Institute of Technology faculty, staff and his parents.“I look forward to working with you and look forward to contributing to the university’s important mission,” the former federal cabinet minister said of his appointment.“I am honoured to be invited to UOIT to support its vital mission.”

“Canada’s ability to compete in the global economy will require a world-leading workforce. Through its talented faculty and innovative curriculum, the University of Ontario Institute of Technology can make a vital contribution to equipping a new generation of Canadians with the skills they need to succeed,” he added. Beatty’s political career began in 1979 when he was appointed as minister of state for the Treasury Board, making him the youngest person ever at that time to serve in the federal cabinet.

From there, Beatty played other roles in the federal government, including Minister of National Revenue in 1984, Solicitor General in 1985, Minister of National Defence in 1986, Minister of National Health and Welfare in 1989, Minister of Communications in 1991 and finally Secretary of State for External Affairs in 1993. After his political career, Beatty continued on as president and CEO of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, president and CEO of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters, co-chair of the Canadian Labour and Business Centre and joined the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. The chancellor position is a three-year term and Beatty will be on the Board of Governors for UOIT. Dr. Ron Bordessa, president of UOIT, welcomed Beatty saying,“This is a very important position as this person symbolizes the university,” and explained that the university wanted to find a person who in his own life expresses the values of the university.

“Our job is the same as what Perrin has done throughout his life – making the world a better place,” said Bordessa. Perrin has always had an eye on the university sector, added Bordessa, and UOIT is“instrumental in ensuring Canada is a place that’s globally competitive.” Beatty said he understands the importance of education and that Canada needs to have a worldclass workforce.“Compared to other institutions, UOIT is small and still new, but its contribution to society has already been felt,” said Beatty, explaining that the first of the university’s graduates have already taken place in the economy.
