The Oshawa Express - Recycling incentives canned

Recycling incentives canned

Dear editor:

I must admit to feeling a little smug about my recycling efforts and about the City’s efforts in this direction… until today.

Suddenly two thirds of my plastics are left for me to put in the garbage. What happened?

I guess we were warned that some changes were being made but in a relatively low-key manner…I wonder how many missed the ads? Regardless, as of now, a great deal of perfectly good recyclable material is suddenly being wasted and redirected back to the dump (Michigan)? Few of us won’t have noticed. I presume the issue of ‘Energy from Waste’ (EFW) campaign just got ratcheted up a couple of notches. Somebody up in the ‘Ivory Tower’ decided citizens seeing this new‘gush’ of potential energy going to the dump might just be enough to give the green light to their EFW plans.

Recyclables are a valuable resource. Obviously turning them into energy is not exactly wasting them (though how cleanly can we do it)? We can and must do better.

Firing up this plan at this point will rapidly remove all incentive – I am very concerned about the direction we seem to be headed.
