| Utilities bill causes confusion |
By Katie Strachan
The Oshawa Express
Some Oshawa councillors
are concerned that the disadvantaged
residents of Oshawa
have to overcome obstacles to
perform a simple task - pay
their utilities bill.“I don’t want to produce
any barriers for people who
may have some disadvantages,”
says Councillor April
Cullen. “I’m afraid with the
economic downturn…that we
have yet to see a great deal of
people who are disadvantaged
for various reasons.”
The President and CEO of
Oshawa Power and Utilities
Corporation (OPUC), Atul
Mahajan, echoes her concerns.“We share your concern for
people who are less advantaged
in our community. It will never
be our goal to inconvenience
people,” he says.
OPUC has set up an agreement
with the TD Bank at King
and Simcoe Streets downtown
where customers can pay their
bill using cash at no extra cost to them.
“With this current economic
time there certainly will be
people who lose their banking
privileges. I would welcome
cash,” adds
Mahajan. But
for city councillors
one bank
that accepts
cash across the
city is not
enough. |
