Let Parkes buy miniatures

Dear Editor:

Re: Mini village homeless Oct. 17, 2007 Council made the right decision and finally voted to sell the Cullen Collection. A number of councillors (Cullen, Kolodzie, Neal, Henry, Pidwerbecki and Mayor Gray) showed leadership and thoughtful consideration in overturning the original decision. Over the past four months, there was a lot of involvement from Oshawa taxpayers who wrote letters and/or communicated with their local councillors to reverse this decision. It proves that ordinary taxpayers can make a difference if they get involved and use research, facts and logic to advance their argument.

From what I understand, councillor Louise Parkes (the main opponent to the sale) as with all city councillors, are paid handsomely to work on behalf of the city and taxpayers. The will of the taxpayers has been expressed vis-avis council's decision to sell the Cullen Collection, so I suggest that no further city time or money be spent on keeping this project alive.

If Ms. Parkes does not feel this way, perhaps she should offer to purchase the collection from the city. As Ms. Parkes confirmed in the Finance and Administration Committee Meeting on Oct. 2, which I participated in, her company Parmac, for which she is the CEO, did consulting work on behalf of the Cullen Family for Cullen Gardens and Miniature Village.

Her obvious intimate knowledge and passion for the collection could be put to good use (on her time not the city's) after she purchases the collection and moves forward with the set-up and operation to prove all us naysayers wrong.

Otherwise, Ms. Parkes as with all of council need to concentrate on the City budgeting process which needs serious work to limit or achieve a zero tax increase for 2008.
