The Oshawa Express - Taxes take bite out of income

Taxes take bite out of income

Dear Editor:

I'd like to comment on the recent Letter to the Editor from Councillor Robert Lutczyk about
Oshawa is GTA's most affordable City.

And I quote: “Now comparing apples to apples, the same house in Oshawa costs one quarter that of a Toronto house and pays one quarter of the property tax. And that is the bottom line.”

Well, let me tell you about my house. I bought it in 1997. It is a 933-sq. ft. home with no garage or finished basement. It was bought for $115,000, a fixer upper. It is now valued at $158,000. The taxes at the time of purchase were $1,380; today 10 years later, it is $2,610 almost 100 per cent more in taxes. And it is still a fixer upper as most of my income goes to taxes. I'd like to know where the councillor buys his apples.
