Routine stops leads to $12,000 in drugs and cash
March 10 2010

A routine stop for what police believed would be a failure to wear a seatbelt ticket soon turned into much more, police say.
One of Durham police’s neighbourhood problem response team officers pulled over a car at Celina and John Streets early in the morning and was surprised to find a slew of drugs and cash inside.
The officer found more than $12,000 in drugs and cash – three grams of marijuana, eight separate bottles of liquid methadone weighing 381 grams, a slew of Oxycontin tablets and an expandable baton. The officer also seized $7,000 in cash from the accused.
A 44-year-old man from Toronto is charged with two counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of dangerous weapon and possessing proceeds obtained by crime over $5,000.
Despite the possession charges, he couldn’t escape the seatbelt infraction ticket. He was also charged under the Highway Traffic Act for not wearing his seatbelt and driving while under suspension, police say.
