New shelter to rise from ashes
The ground of the new shelter is officially broken signifying the start of construction.

Out of the ashes will rise a beautiful new building. This is the hope of the Humane Society of Durham Region as they recently celebrated the groundbreaking for their brand new facility in Whitby.

The Humane Society was destroyed by fire in December 2008 and therefore called for the organization to find a new home. The new building will be a total of 6,205.29 square feet and will include indoor animal facilities and required office space.

The site will also include outdoor amenitites such as a covered feline enclosure and dog run occupying about 1,300 square feet.
