It’s a symbol of hope carried through the streets by law enforcement of all types.
The ‘flame of hope’ made its way through Durham Region recently raising money and awareness for Special Olympics.
Dozens of Special Olympic athletes, members of Durham Regional Police (DRP), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and members of the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services carried the ‘flame of hope’.
The 24th Annual Law Enforcement Torch Run took place over three days and traveled from Beaverton through Uxbridge, Port Perry, through Bowmanville, Oshawa, Pickering and into Whitby.
Members of the public lined the streets in local municipalities showing support for law enforcement and a number of local Special Olympians who came out to the run.
“I was very impressed with the amount of support from the community in this year’s Torch Run,” says Coordinator Constable Paul Hawrychuk.
“I would also like to thank all the DRP members who contributed to this event and made it a huge success.”
Durham Police also sent a special thank you to Special Olympian Ryan Colpitts who went door-to-door raising $1,900 towards the games.
Every year, about $1 million is raised for the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.
All the money raised is used for community programs, athlete training and helping to make the event a success each year.
The 2010 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games will be held in London, Ontario from July 13 to July 17.
Athletes from across the country will be taking part in the competition in the hopes of representing the country at the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Greece.
