Construction rampant in city
August 11, 2010

Whether it’s road construction on Simcoe Street, Taunton Road or numerous other infrastructure projects, Oshawa is a city that is changing at a rapid pace.
For example UOIT is making headway in its projects, building a downtown campus that is sure to draw students as well as businesses alike.
It means growth for the city.
But where there is advancement in infrastructure, which is positive for the city, there are also areas of concern.
Road repairs are clearly needed in the city. And while it is inconvenient, it is paramount.
The roads in this city have been known to make headlines from time to time because of their poor condition.
However, one project in the city has some residents up in arms because of the noise, dust and general inconvenience. It’s the Trent University renovation of the former St. Michael Catholic School.
And at the end of the day it’s really a catch-22. In one sense the residents have every right to be upset because of the conditions they are spending their summer in.
No one wants to be bombarded with noise or excessive dust. They can’t even sit outside.
Essentially their summer has surely been different than they anticipated.
But on the other side of the fence there is a company trying to get a project done, up and running and ready for students in September.
With the deadline fast approaching the work has to get done.
In these cases there is no harmonious solution. There isn’t a way to please everyone.
And saying the construction is only weeks away from completion isn’t enough solace for these residents.
But at the end of the day in order for a city to grow and prosper, inconvenience seems to be the name of game.
