Dear Editor,
Monday, August 9th 2010 marked the second annual Oshawa Peacekeepers Day celebration held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43.
Peacekeepers Day recognizes the tremendous achievements of our military, firefighters, RCMP and police as peacekeepers. This is part of the United Nation International Peacekeepers Day and is designated to honour those who have served in peace missions.
Oshawa Peacekeepers Day’s primary goal is to honour our local heroes who have improved Canada’s world stature as peacekeepers.
The Master of Ceremony Mr. Doug Finney, past president of the RCL 43, and the enthusiastic audience was graced by informative and passionate speeches by Adrian Bugelli, EA to MP Colin Carrie, Mayor John Gray, Deputy Chief Sherry Whiteway, Durham Police, Cathy Clarke of Heritage Oshawa, Erica Hamm of Save the Collection, Joan Kerr, FBSC, Keith Jones, Oshawa Pipe Band and Glenn McKnight, Oshawa Remembers.
The audience was entertained by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 43 Pipe Band with a medley from their song collection. The public were able to speak directly to volunteers from various community organizations including: The Korean War display, Creative Arts Guild, The Clarington Golden Gate Tribute Centre, Heritage Oshawa, Save the Collection Camp X, the Foundation for Building Sustainable Communities, 100 Years of the Canadian Navy, Support the Troops and the Commonwealth War Graves Photographic Project.
A special thank you to Eleanor Mason Beeke, president of the RCL Branch 43 Ladies Auxiliary for their fantastic job in preparing food for the event
