What better way to celebrate?
August 25, 2010

Canada’s Navy is celebrating its 100th anniversary, commemorating years of accomplishments coupled with some difficult memories of years long past.
And the theme behind all the celebrations across the country, which mainly took place in June, was to “Bring the Navy to Canadians.”

What better way for Oshawa to celebrate than to visit the HCMS Fredericton when it comes to Oshawa in September?
While the ship may not necessarily be directly correlated to the centennial celebration, it is a good way for Oshawa residents to become exposed to the Canadian navy.
It’s a good way for residents to see just how much work the commander and crew put into such an advanced ship that sails all over the world.

It’s a good chance to listen to sailors and their stories and experiences.
And it’s a good chance for the navy to see if they may be able to recruit some residents into joining the fast-paced career in a time when recruiting is down.

Sure, citizens can celebrate the navy through a new one-dollar commemorative coin immortalizing the centennial, but better yet residents could actually come and see a powerful ship as she berths at the west wharf at Oshawa’s harbour.

When the HMCS Ville de Quebec arrived in 2009 the spectacle was something to marvel.
Whether you are a navy guru or not the sheer size was a humbling to say the least.
Not too mention the celebrations that took place in and around the ship.
Local navy cadets gathered excited to see where their future may end up, and widows of veterans reminisced about days long past.

It’s an educational day for all, and it is a rare opportunity to catch a glimpse of a ship that will soon set out to sea.
