Use paid parking to collect money from rec users

Dear Editor:

Just when it appeared that Mayor John Gray was going to take a leadership role and convince
his dysfunctional council to impose an essential free hike for the city’s recreational facilities, he blinked and the matter was dropped.

One has to wonder if members of this sad crowd manage their own finances as they do the city’s. Clearly, the opinions of the city’s squeaky wheels took precedence over common sense.

During the last municipal election campaign I heard only one candidate who was forthright enough to point out that demand for more services and amenities means tax increases. It seemed like common sense but he was not elected.

In view of what happened over the proposed fee increase, I suppose that I shouldn’t have been surprised. Since that time, a lot of facilities have come into service but still nobody wants to pay the price.

All need not be lost, however. It seems to me that every recreation or sports facility and park has an extravagantly sized parking lot. Why not charge for every vehicle that uses those lots? After all, when we go to the clinic, the dentist and even the downtown library, we have to pay to park. And if we’re unfortunate enough to have to visit the hospital, the parking fee makes us feel worse than ever. So what’s so special about the sports and recreation fraternity that they get off scot-free?

Exemptions would be made for seniors and the disabled, of course, but everyone else would pay. If they thought the cost too prohibitive, they could avoid it by walking, running, cycling or taking the bus. When it’s all said and done, the purpose of their visit to the facility is physical fitness.
