| Public relations expense a
good return on investment |
Dear Editor:
Not that I see eye to eye with
Mayor John Gray and the daisy
chain councillors at city hall
but I do give them credit, and as
an Oshawa resident for over 50
years I have been watching
with some interest the recent
musings by Federal Finance
Minister Jim Flaherty on council’s
decision to hire a public
relations firm to ensure the federal
government gives the Port
of Oshawa back to the city.
Perhaps Mr. Flaherty should
be spending more time dealing
with the crisis in Ontario’s
manufacturing sector and the
impending recession about to
hit our economy rather than
second-guessing a spending
decision by the City of
Oshawa’s elected council.
Mr. Flaherty is telling the
residents of Oshawa to just wait
until the Crombie Report and
everything will be okay.

 |
This is
nothing more than a delaying
tactic by the Minister and the
residents of Oshawa should not
be fooled. Just think of the
Gomery Report, a report that
received national attention and
that the government agreed to
implement all of its recommendations,
to find that most of the
report was totally ignored.
The citizens of Oshawa are
quite aware of federal ministers
holding this chair ignoring us
on our waterfront, and quite
frankly, Mr. Flaherty, the residents
of Oshawa want their port
back regardless of what Mr.
Crombie thinks.
Perhaps an investment of a
few hundred thousand dollars
to help mobilize the public to
take their port back is exactly
what the city needs.
And if this results in millions
of dollars per year in
additional city revenue, then I
consider it a great return on
investment by city council.
