The Oshawa Express - Tax rate out of control

Tax rate out of control

Dear Editor:

I just bought a home in Oshawa in the area of Rossland and Stevenson. The home was
built in 1982. What I find kind of extreme is that the property taxes last year were about $4,700, but now they have been increased to $5,600.

That's a $900 increase per year or $75 per month extra. I find this too much of an increase for a couple that just bought a home. We had to pay for a land transfer tax on top of this. Shouldn't we be getting a break because we are buying a home?

This is just my opinion but I'm sure there are other couples in Oshawa thinking the same thing. I agree that we need to bring a lot more businesses in Oshawa. I find we are lacking solid businesses that are going to provide local jobs.

I'm in the I.T. field and I'm not able to find jobs in Oshawa or Durham so I have to spend $246 per month just to get to work downtown Toronto. Something has to be done in Oshawa if we want to keep living here. Property taxes are way too high, in my opinion, and there are no jobs.
