It is impossible to imagine the
pain, anguish and heartbreak that
beset the family of Beverly Smith,
the 22-year old wife and mother
who was murdered in her own home
in Raglan in 1974.
The sense of non-closure would
only extend the heartbreak as the
years went by with no arrests in the
case.
Then, just last week, the break
Beverly’s family has been waiting
for all this time. On March 17,
Durham Regional Police arrested
56-year old Alan Smith (no relation),
and charged him with seconddegree
murder. Now a resident of
Cobourg, Smith was the former
neighbour of the victim, and an
acquaintance of the family.
Crime-solving techniques have
improved dramatically since
Beverly’s murder.
We now have at
our disposal a myriad of technology
to assist police departments in finding
a break, even in the coldest of
cold cases.
Many of these leading-edge technologies
are being taught right here
at the University of Ontario Institute
of Technology (UOIT).
