| Citizens needs to stand up
against harbour industry |
Dear Editor:
Citizens of Oshawa, please
wake up!
Our waterfront is under
attack by large industrial
business. Big business is dictating
to the city their needs
for our waterfront: our city is
now faced with a new and
larger rail spur line that is
slated to enter into our harbour
lands; a request to rezone
the pioneer cemetery on
Gifford Hill to permit the construction
of an ethanol plant;
and a proposed garbage incineration
facility.
Should these projects proceed,
we can say goodbye to
the Second Marsh and
wildlife reserve, Lakeview
Park (as we know it),
Darlington Provincial Park
(who would want to camp
between an ethanol plant and
an incinerator?).

The recreational
marina would never
return to public use. The
city’s vision for
residential/commercial development
on the harbour lands
would be scrapped.
We as citizens have a
chance to save our waterfront.
Speak up.
Call your federal member
of parliament, your provincial
member of parliament, the
mayor, your city council
member, the chamber of commerce
and the harbour commission.
Tell them of your
concerns; voice your opinion.
Demand the release of the
Crombie report.
Request the city’s business
plan for the harbour and
waterfront. It is our right to
know what is what.
Five years is enough time.
All levels of government owe
our city a decision. No more
lip service please.
