Build ethanol plant in agricultural community
Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Dear editor:

I have to agree with previous letters from Gary Hood, Dave Smith, Dr. Godfrey, and
Michael Maynard in keeping an ethanol plant far away from Second Marsh and the Oshawa Harbour. If it is true that there is a 2-5 mile evacuation radius for an ethanol catastrophe, we must also consider that Hwy.

401, General Motors of Canada and both the CNR and CPR tracks fall into this proximity effecting broader parameters than south Oshawa. The city's fire services will have to be upgraded as fighting an ethanol fire requires a different approach. This will come at a great cost to you and I, the taxpayers.

The construction of this plant could deter alternative investment at the waterfront, limit all recreational and residential opportunities, and the safety risks presented by the ethanol plant could jeopardize any existing harbour investments, natural landscape and assets—all possibilities carrying much heavier consequences for our city.

This building is more suited to a rural area where corn and rail access are immediate like most of Ontario's current operating ethanol facilities. The farmers that readily accept the government financial subsidy and wish to see ethanol plants built should be prepared to have them in their communities.

One might even question how costeffective these plants really are if the government needs to so heavily be subsidizing them. I am not against the farmers or a fanatical environmentalist. I am not even entirely against the production of ethanol. I am just against the proposed location of this plant on Oshawa's waterfront.

John Malish
