Blame misplaced in GM crisis
Wednesday, May 7, 2008

Dear Editor:

With the recent announcement of yet another line being eliminated from Oshawa, CAWLocal 222 president Chris Buckley said the federal government should get off their rears and help the auto industry.

Given the amount of federal and provincial aid given to General Motors, I think the real question is whether Mr. Buckley will get off his rear to help lobby to bring product to Oshawa. He needs to get his head out of the sand and face the facts.

Our dollar is high, the American UAW union now is responsible for health care costs, not General Motors, which takes away our former Canadian advantage regarding health care costs, the price of gas is high, and the United States appears to be in a recession.

Vehicles made in Canada are sold in the U.S. where demand has declined. Nobody here agrees with South Korea restricting the sale of our cars being sold there while their cars are sold here.

The solution is a free trade agreement, which will open up their markets to our cars. Mr. Buckley advocates trade barriers and protectionism in an age of global trade.

He needs a whiff of reality in this regard, as his policies will cost us many jobs. General Motors is not owned and operated by Ottawa or Toronto, and Mr. Buckley needs to do his job to convince General Motors to use the government aid to keep product here in Oshawa.

His political posturing is an insult to the men and women who have lost their jobs.

Chris Topple
