School board director’s proposal is shortsighted

Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Dear Editor:

Bravo, bravo for your depiction of (Durham Catholic District School Board director of education) Paul Pulla and his shortsighted proposals to close St. Gregory’s, the only elementary school in the downtown core area of Oshawa, a proposal which negates all the city’s plans to bring housing, condominiums, etc. to downtown area to bring in more families and he wants to close this school?

Whatever is he thinking? Our attendance at the public meetings, sending in proposals, writing letters to the DCDSB all have fallen on deaf ears. Even the recommendation of the Academic Review Committee to keep an elementary school open in downtown core area, this recommendation was tossed aside. Submission to the Downtown Oshawa Board of Management in this matter has gone unacknowledged, no response.

For the past six decades, members of my family have been attending St. Gregory's school with two in attendance at present. All through the years I have supported Catholic education
in Oshawa away back to the days when there was no government funding only now to have Paul Pulla make this proposal to close St. Gregory’s, to bus our children to a distant school
where they will sit in box-like portables on a nice new paved parking lot?

Not our children Mr. Pulla! So bravo, bravo to The Oshawa Express for your courage to editorialize this, to take a stand, to point out the short-sightedness of Paul Pulla's proposals. You have done what the other local paper has failed to do: you have grabbed the public's attention.

G. Burke-Wilson
