Oshawa’s hospital will welcome a new boss this summer. Kevin Empey has been appointed
CEO of Lakeridge Health, which encompasses sites in Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington and Port Perry. Empey is replacing Brian Lemon, who announced his plans to retire last fall.

Empey, who will officially step into the position July 21, most recently held the title of Executive Vice-President of Clinical Support and Corporate Services at Toronto’s University Health Network, which includes Toronto General, Princess Margaret and Toronto Western Hospitals. The Toronto resident, recruited for the position, was attracted to Lakeridge Health because of its reputation in the medical community.

“The medical quality is great,” says Empey, adding that he looks forward to working for a corporation of Lakeridge Health’s size with its strong connection to the communities it serves. Empey adds that with each organization he’s been with, he has sought to improve the way it runs and saw that drive in current Lakeridge Health staff.

“I’ve been impressed by everybody I met,” he says. Previous to the University Health Network, Empey held management positions at both Peel Memorial Hospital and St. Michaels Hospital and has been a lecturer on health administration with the University of Toronto Masters of Health Administration Program, Rotman School of Business, and York University.

He has also served on a number of boards and committees, including: the Canadian Institute for Health Information; Ontario Hospital Association (OHA), Physician Services Committee; Joint Policy and Planning Committee (JPPC – joint Ministry of Health and OHA); Diagnostic
Services Committee (Joint Ministry of Health, OHA, Ontario Medical Association); and Council of Academic Hospitals of Ontario“We are very pleased to welcome Kevin to the Lakeridge family as our new CEO,” says Marion Saunders, chair of the Board of Trustees.

“In addition to his wealth of experience, Kevin is no stranger to the Durham Region. A member of the Board of the Nature Conservancy of Ontario, his love of nature, particularly bird watching, has brought him regularly to our region giving him a good appreciation of all that our communities have to offer.”
