Going green in Durham
August 26, 2009

The Green Party of Canada has announced a nomination contest to choose the next candidate
for Durham as part of the 41st federal election. According to a Durham Green Party press
release, a possible election call could happen in 2009 or 2010.“Becoming a candidate and standing up for what you believe in is an incredible experience and public service,” says Regional Party Organizer Rebecca Harrison.“Candidates are the ambassadors of our party and should be familiar with the policies and principles of the Green Party of Canada, comfortable
with public speaking, extra attention, able to communicate succinctly and effectively, and be a
member of the Green Party of Canada.”

Contestants must submit a complete candidate application and a biography. Nominations will be accepted from Friday, Sept. 4 to Friday, Sept. 11. The nomination meeting will be held Thursday, Sept. 24 in Port Perry. The Green Party of Canada is a recognized federal political party that has candidates in all 308 ridings across the country. According to a press release, in Durham 6,041 people voted green in the most recent election, which was up 6.8 per cent compared to the 2006 election results.

The Durham district includes Clarington, Scugog, Uxbridge and the Mississaugas of
Scugog Island. For more information on the nomination contest please contact Regional Organizer Rebecca Harrison at rebecca.harrison@greenparty.ca or 905-999-5479.
