A77-year-old Oshawa woman is in critical condition in a Toronto hospital after being hit by a car. She was walking east across Simcoe Street in the south crosswalk at Hospital Court with her granddaughter when a red Chevrolet Cavalier, traveling north began to drive into the intersection. The car struck the woman just as she was about to clear the crosswalk area. Her granddaughter wasn’t injured. When police arrived on scene, they saw the woman in the north curb lane of Simcoe Street within the southern crosswalk.

The woman was rushed to nearby Lakeridge Health Oshawa Hospital and was then airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital where she remains in critical condition. The Durham Regional Police Collision Investigation Unit was called to the scene and the surrounding roads were closed for hours as they investigated.

Alcohol and weather were not considered factors in the collision, police say.
