Some may argue that many of life’s
lessons are learned during the college
years, but for Jonny Fox, an Oshawa
native, it was the beginning of so
much more. He was attending college
when he met Renee Couture. She
would later become his band mate.
The duo describes their music as,“the height of an emotion where
everything seems to stand still.”
Such is the reason why they chose
the name The Standstills.“It was such a release from the regular
school stresses and reminded us
how much we love to play. From there
everything else just kind of happened
organically,” says Couture of the first
time they played together.
While bands of two are uncommon,
Couture says it just worked for
the duo.
“Since the beginning our sound
filled out so nicely that we never felt
the need to add any other members. It
could be the fact that we both enjoy
listening to other two piece bands, but
we feel less can be more,” she says.
Fox is on guitar and vocals while
Couture plays drums and percussion.
Since the inception of the band in
January of last year, the Standstills
have been writing their own songs and
developing their first CD.“We write all originals, although
we throw the odd cover in every now
and then. Jonny primarily writes the
songs; from there I bring rhythm and
some changes in arrangement to the
table,” says Couture.
The duo released their debut CD,
an extended play, locally yesterday.“We're very excited about it. It's
been a long creative process and to
finally have the final product in our
hands and be able to share our passion
with other people is a great feeling,”
says Fox, adding that inspiration
comes from a variety of sources.“Inspiration can come from anywhere,
but as far as musical inspiration
anything with passion and emotional
intrigue.”
The rock/alternative/blues band is
hoping to meet more interesting people
who love the same music they do.
Fox, who is from Oshawa, says the
band, which is now based out of
London, is absolutely up for doing
more shows in the city.
The Standstills have dreams and
aspirations for their music and in ten
years they hope to be doing what
they’re doing today.“Well, we can say we'll be ten years
older and still doing what we love to
do, that's what is important to us,”
explains Couture. To listen to some of
