Keeping food safe without any power
September 2, 2009

This summer has been filled with treacherous thunderstorms that have left plenty of people in the region without power. But what do you do with your food when the power is out? According to the Region of Durham, there are several steps that can be taken during an outage that can
save your food and your belly. For those who do encounter a power outage, a full upright freezer will keep everything frozen for about two days.

A half-full freezer will keep food frozen for a day. The refrigerator section will keep food cold for about four to six hours. If the power is only going to be out for a short time, keeping doors closed as much as possible can help keep food safe. Ice will keep food cold. Sometimes raw food can leak during thawing. Clean and disinfect the areas of food that have been touched and do not reuse the clothes.

Throw out anything with a strange colour or odour. When in doubt, throw it out.
