A Durham Regional Police Officer has been charged with assault after allegedly punching a 16-year-old teen while off-duty.
The altercation took place outside of a restaurant in the AMC Theatre complex in Whitby. The teen victim and another 16-year-old boy were leaving a Super Bowl party Feb. 7 at a local restaurant in the complex when the off-duty police officer became involved in an argument with the two, police say.
The officer allegedly punched one of the 16-year-old boys and grabbed the other. Police say there were no serious injuries.
The officer, a 41-year-old who has been on the Durham police force for 15 years, was arrested two days later and charged with two counts of assault.
He was released on a Promise to Appear notice.
The officer, who works in the Centralized Alternative Response Unit in Whitby, has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of court proceedings, police say.
