Their body temperature adapts to whatever they’re touching.
They don’t have sweat glands.
They don’t eat anything but meat and they were inside the Oshawa Public Libraries Legends Centre Branch to kick-off March break.
The Sciensational Snakes program was a hit Monday morning.
Slithering, slime less snakes wowed more than 30 children and their parents who took part in the free program.
Trainers Jenny and Steve were on hand to show off the creatures – many of whom are endangered in Ontario.
One by one Garter snakes, Black Rat snakes, Water and Milk snakes made their way out from the green chest in front of the cheering audience.
The children waited in anticipation to see who, or what, was about to emerge.
But the program wasn’t just about snakes. Jenny and Steve had turtles to show off to the eager audience.
After they had learned the facts of the snakes that call Ontario, and even Oshawa home, the children were given the opportunity to pet some of the corn snakes and Bitsy the Boa Constrictor who weighs more than some of the children participating.
Most of the little ones watching were excited at the opportunity to pet the massive snake but some couldn’t hold back the tears of fear and chose to look rather than touch.
The Oshawa Public Libraries have a number of events for kids in celebration of March break. For information about what’s going on visit www.oshlib.ca.
